The Passions Icon -Original-
The icon exist out of 21 images related to the last week of Christ in Jerusalem. The Passion is the Christian theological term used for the events and suffering – physical, spiritual, and mental – of Jesus in the hours prior to and including his trial and execution by crucifixion. The Crucifixion of Jesus is the central event. More info wikipedia.
In the museum I have bought postcards of 11 stages (scenes). Here a few of the images. Eventually the images will have the same look but will not be preciese copies.
Entrance in Jerusalem
The entrance of Jesus in Jerusalem is remembered as Palm Sunday. There is so much to tell about this event that I realate to a website. It is a joyous event, but Jesus himself stated that 'these people who cheer me on now will cheer on my death in a week'. People put cloths and palm leaves on the street for the donkey to walk on.
We will stick to the outlay of the image, except for the donkey. For some reason it floats in the air. Probably the painter first drawn the donkey, before he painted the disciples?
"Behold the Man"
This image shows the judgement of Jesus Christ by Pontius Pilate. The scene her depicts the problem Pilate faced. It wasn't a fair trail and Pilate was very well aware of this. His wife had a dream of this the night before. In the top left you see him in a discussion with Jesus. In a way he tried not to condemn Jesus, but that would be a great risk to his position, he had to please the Jewish leaders.
So he came up with a way not to be (feel) responcible. He didn't order the death sentence, but lett the people do it. The scene displays him washing his hands with innocence. A smart political act. Miljons and miljons of people in two centuries would recite his name in the declaration of faith as the one who ordered Jesus crucifixtion...
